This course provides a practical introduction to computers: hardware, operating systems and applications packages; programming; developments in the computer industry from engineering and societal perspectives. Personal computing on a IBM-PC platform is emphasized, with lab exercises designed to provide working knowledge of basic application packages of word processing (via Word), spreadsheets (via Excel) and database management, of programming concepts via Pascal, and of general Internet applications. A significant term project involving all the elements taught this quarter is required.
