* Have a high-level understanding of how to design a general-purpose computer, starting with simple logic gates.

New copies of the book come shrink-wrapped with some CDs. However, we'll be using different software for the class, so it's all right to pick up a used textbook that's missing the CDs. If you use an older edition, it is your responsibility to make sure material and assignments are the same.
Announcements, lecture notes, and homeworks will be posted here. Homework solutions should be available 2-4 days after the due date.
The newsgroup is mostly for questions and answers. We'll do our best to respond as quickly as possible. But don't forget that we might not answer all questions. Newsgroup is just a place for discussion and help.
The newsgroups are hosted by news.cs.uiuc.edu. This server is password protected! To get access, you must visit http://tsg.cs.uiuc.edu/services/newsgroups/.
We'll be using a program called LogicWorks for machine problems. (The Xilinx software that comes with the textbook is more difficult to use and a little more powerful and than we need for this course.) Before the first MP we'll offer a tutorial. LogicWorks is installed in the Windows labs in L426 DCL and 406B8 Engineering Hall. Make sure that you are aware of the lab times and plan ahead accordingly.
If you want a copy of LogicWorks for yourself, you can order it from the manufacturer at http://capilano.com/LogicWorks/. It is also rumored that LogicWorks can be purchased from Amazon.com.
EWS accounts (for the Windows labs in L426 DCL and 406B8 Engineering Hall) are automatically created soon after you register for this class. If you experience problems logging into EWS machines after it is announced that you can log in them, please let us know.
Your learning will be evaluated based on regular Mallard labs, 7 homeworks, 4 machine problems, 2 in-class exams, and a final exam.

Midterms 2 x 19%
Final Exam 1 x 27%
We will give one Mallard quiz after every class. You can try each quiz multiple times until the due date. However, this format is subject to change; you will be given ample warning of changes.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The percentages are subject to change.
Conflict exams will be offered for students who cannot take the exam on the regular time ONLY IF:
1) They have a doctor's report, or
2) They have 3 or more exams within 24 hours.
Note that, conflict exams will be harder, so try to make sure you can take the exams on their regular scheduled times.
For each of the MP's (NOT homework), you may work alone or with a partner. If you work with a partner, you should hand in one copy of each assignment, with both names written clearly at the top of the first page. If a name is missing when the MP is submitted, there is no way of getting a grade even if two people did it together. So don't forget to write your names on every page. Remember that you are on your own during the exams, so each group member is responsible for understanding the material individually. And remember that you should do your homework by yourself instead of with your MP partner!
Once again, homeworks MUST be solved individually.
Late submission policy
You can submit assignments 2 days after the due date. However, every late day will cost 10% penalty on the total score taken for that assignment. Any submission after 2 days is rejected.
Academic dishonesty is a very serious offense.
If we find that cheating has occurred, at a minimum, all parties involved will receive a failing grade for the assignment or exam in question.
Repeated or flagrant offenses will result in failing grades in the course, and potentially dismissal from the University.
